Bartitsu workshop updates

Please feel free to share the information below. There may well be other more stage-oriented workshops happening in conjunction with Tony’s visit as well, but that’s still undetermined. I tagged on a brief intro paragraph, but the below is mostly from Neal Stevenson. The thought was that there might be interest in the Steampunk community, but we weren’t sure the best way to tap in to that- if anyone has connections, please pass this along.

If you aren’t familiar with Bartitsu, it really ought to be the official martial art of the steampunk set (it kinda is: http://www.bartitsu.org/index.php/2009/09/bartitsu-steampunk-martial-art/). A Victorian-era Mixed Martial Art combining Jujitsu (the first time it was seen in the Western world), Savate, Pugilism, cane fighting, and other influences, Bartitsu is seeing quite the resurgence these days thanks to a series of publications, the new Sherlock Holmes movie (which sadly doesn’t really have anything to do with Bartitsu), and the work of Tony Wolf.

Tony Wolf will be teaching two classes on Saturday, 6 March 2010 at SANCA, the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts, 674 S Orcas St., Seattle. Please don’t contact SANCA directly since the front office staff there will not have any useful information about the event.

The first class will run from 9-12 and will be about the Wolf System, a set of foundational combat movement exercises.

The second class will run from 1:30-4:30 and will be an introduction to Bartitsu.

On Sunday, 7 March from 8-11, Tony Wolf will be teaching an invitation-only event for members of a local group who are already familiar with the basic material.

The fee for one class is $30. For two classes, $50. A walking stick (preferably rattan) is recommended. Rattan sticks will be available for purchase on the day of the seminar for $10.

All participants must sign a waiver.

If you are receiving this email, your address has been added to a mailing list and you should receive more detailed information as it becomes available. Please address any further inquiries to wolfclass@lonin.org.

Thanks again for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you at the event!
